Farewell to Mrs Klan

I took Mrs. Klan out for breakfast this morning and then we returned to GES for an assembly to honour her-- 37 years teaching and so many hearts touched.

For those who participated I want to pass on a heart-felt thank you. It was a wonderful tribute to an outstanding teacher. Thank you Mrs. Klan for all that you have done for us! Best wishes in your future endeavors as you begin your retirement.

National Aboriginal Day Celebration at GES

There was a celebration at GES this afernoon/evening in honour of National Aboriginal Day. There were crafts, singing, words of wisdom from a Squamish Chief, along with a pot luck dinner and a lot of fellowship.

Those in attendance really seemed to enjoy the time together.

Covered for Mrs. Servo-Sept Class

I covered for Mrs. Servo-Sept this afternoon, as she took the GES Games Crew on their year-end field trip-- they went kayaking thanks to the PAC.

The class was delightful and after USSR time we went outside and enjoyed the great weather with a game of Capture the Flag. The Green Team was victorious over the Red Team 2-1. It was good fun and they ran until they were very tired.

They finished the afternoon up working at a variety of centers. The students were full of energy all afternoon.

Just a reminder that the Aboriginal Gathering tomorrow, from 4:30- 7:30 p.m. will be a celebration of National Aboriginal Day-- all are welcome. There will be a pot-luck dinner for those interested.

Field Trip, Birthday & Art

The Kindergarten classes were getting ready to go on their field trip to Davis Bay and a got a picture of two excited students taking up their class attendance. When I ventured to Mrs. Klan's class I heard a birthday song... we sang another rendition of Happy Birthday when I went in the class. The two students seemed appreciative.

The third picture is an art project that Mrs. Kopeck's class has done. It is great to see how far these K students have come.

Division 1 is on a field trip to Katherine Lake today, so it should be a bit quieter than usual.

Annual GES Sports Day Tomorrow

I wanted to remind parents about GES Sports Day tomorrow-- rain or shine. The PAC will provide lunch at no charge-- a hot dog, a bottle of water and a freezie. Additional items will be available at the canteen, which will be in the under cover primary area.

The Primary students will be having their activities in the morning, while the intermediate students will be doing a variety of activities throughout the day. All students will get a participation ribbon, while the intermediate students will have three competitive events in which ribbons will be given out for places 1-6; 100 m dash, 800 m run and softball throw.

It should be a great day. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers. Thanks to the teachers for organizing the day as well.

Mrs. Palmer visits GES

In preparation for next year Mrs. Palmer visited GES today. She will assume the duties of Principal of GES next year. We met and reviewed basic information about GES, we went out for recess supervision and we visited some classes. I have posted a few pictures of her visit.

Fundraiser for Diabetes Research a Huge Success

Madison MacPhail, our own Canadian Ambassador for Diabetes Research, spearheaded a fundraising effort with last week's GES Coin Drive. We raised an amazing amount of money-- $1,173.48!!! How good is that? Division 6 raised $263.36 and will have free pizza tomorrow.

As I went to various classes this morning the level of activity was very high and students were busy engaged in their learning. I have included some photos of my visit to Mrs. Kopeck's class (both classes were singing and signing together). Students showed me their plants that were drooping, as well. Ms. Taylor was working on a fractions unit when I stopped by her class and I also included a picture from Mrs. Klan's class.

I covered for Mrs. Murray this morning, as we were short a TOC. After working through numerical prefixes, a daily quiz and the problem of the week, students worked on an IXL Math program-- they worked on a geometry unit. The students really seemed to enjoy this program, as they get immediate feedback.

I am off to a meeting at KES this afternoon. Thankfully we have a TOC in this afternoon.

I just finished working with our discus throwers (they threw really well today) and I wanted to pass on my regards to everyone. I will be at a meeting at the SBO tomorrow so Mr. Sullivan will cover for me in my absence.

For those of you that have not heard yet, I have been assigned to Pender Harbour Secondary School for the 2011-2012 school year and current Superintendent of SD 46, Deborah Palmer, will be the Principal at GES. Change can be difficult for a lot of us, but I am confident that everything will work out well. It goes without saying that I will miss the staff, students and parents of GES. Mrs. Palmer will do a great job and I know that she is looking forward to her assignment at GES.

I will savour my time here and look forward to having a great finish to our school year.

BOARD OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES ADMINISTRATIVE
ASSIGNMENTS FOR 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR

The Board of Education is pleased to announce the following administrative assignments for 2011-2012. The school district operates with three family groupings: Gibsons, Sechelt and Pender Harbour. The schools are staffed and budgeted within each family group. Gibsons Family includes Elphinstone Secondary School and its feeder schools, Langdale Elementary, Cedar Grove Elementary, Gibsons Elementary and Roberts Creek Elementary. Sechelt Family consists of Chatelech Secondary School and its feeder schools, West Sechelt, Kinnikinnick, Davis Bay and Halfmoon Bay Elementary Schools. Pender Harbour Family comprises Pender Harbour Secondary and Madeira Park Elementary Schools. The Sunshine Coast Alternative School supports learners in all our family groupings.

I have had several meetings today including an Elementary Principals' Meeting, a School Planning Council Meeting and our PAC Meeting. I did teach two PE classes as well, among other things.

We have a heavy duty drill at GES today and tomorrow. They are doing some geo-tech work as part of the new rebuild project. As you can see from the picture they started in the parking lot and have worked to the all-weather field. They will be drilling 15 holes around the property as part of this stage of the rebuild.

Mrs. Knecht's students are proud of their Ukranian Easter eggs-- as can be seen above. Despite the cold weather today our students were outside at recess enjoying spring activities.

Anti-Bullying Workshop

SCTA President, Jenny Garrels, presented an Anti-Bullying Workshop last night at GES. She did a great job and provided a lot of insight and gave the parents some strategies to use with their children.

I am at a Principals' Meeting today and our new Superintendent, Patrick Bocking, is here visiting. He will be here the rest of the week and he will be visiting GES on Friday.

GES is a busy place. Aside from all of the exciting learning that is going on we have an environmental assessment team looking at our site, as part of the process in the GES rebuild, on campus today.

The author in residence, Maggie DeVries, returns today to continue working with Ms. Duncan's class-- the feedback has been awesome so far.

Activity Time

As I went to various classes this afternoon there were a variety of activities going on; from Mrs. Klan's class painting, Mrs. Kopeck's class doing marvelous things with their sand and Ms. Taylor and Mrs. Sullivan's class working together at a variety of centers. The energy was great-- it may have something to do with the awesome weather.

I have included a picture of our Games Crew Bulletin Board as well. The Games Crew has been doing training this week so they can work more effectively with our primary students. It is a wonderful leadership opportunity that is provided by Mrs. Servos-Sept. Bravo!
